Why SBOMs matter at release time

The same principle applies to signatures and attestations: the closer they are to the artifact creation event, the easier they are to verify later.

Apache also reported a $10 million Responsible AI Initiative, with initial support from Anthropic and Alpha-Omega.
The important signal is that AI governance work is being attached to an existing open-source foundation rather than treated as a separate proprietary layer.
That may matter for AI libraries and infrastructure projects where the code, governance model, and security process are intertwined.
What remains uncertain
The report is an organizational self-report.
Its numbers are useful for documenting Apache's activity, but they are not a universal measure of open-source health.
